Monday – Miss Wheelchair Maryland, Shannon Minnick left Baltimore on August 9th via Air Trans, ( who most graciously upgraded her and Miss Wheelchair DC Tiray Striggs to First Class ) and flew to Grand Rapids Michigan to compete in the 2011 Miss Wheelchair America pageant. Monday evening was orientation.

Tuesday -Free and fun day, a tour of the Gerald Ford Museum was organized for today. After the museum the girls all had a scavenger hunt throughout Grand Rapids looking for different monuments and statues. The girls had to get photographed with their finds. The whole group went to a dueling Piano Bar called Mojo’s to cap their evening off.

Wednesday – Judging began this morning. Each contestant had 5 minutes to talk about who they are and to tell about their accomplishments in life. They also had to attend various workshops. The evening was dress up as a character or star and more fun followed. Shannon decided to join the outdoor public party later that night and everyone wanted to stop her and get a picture with her dressed up as the Mad Hatter, her chosen character.

Thursday – Judging again this morning the young ladies had ten minutes with each judge and they also had workshops all throughout the day. Thursday evening was the second theme night, Motown was a big success.

Friday – Last day of judging today starting early once again they were all judged at ten minute intervals, questioned about their knowledge of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and other issues surrounding life with disabilities. The evening events will be for all the girls to deliver their platform speeches. Platforms represent what they won their state titles on, usually being something they advocate strongly for with regards to Women and Disabilities.

Saturday – Will be the announcement of a new Miss Wheelchair America 2011. We all wait with anticipation for the new titleholder to be crowned.

Sunday – Rounds the week off with a Queen’s breakfast celebrating the new reigning Miss Wheelchair America.

This event was the most inspirational, educational, and emotional event I have attended since crowned Ms. Wheelchair MD.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. News of the proclamation officially reached Texas on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger, backed by nearly 2,000 troops, arrived in Galveston and publicly announced that slavery in the United States had ended. This was two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official Jan. 1, 1863. We as the people have so much to be thankful for.

….. O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov’d homes and the war’s desolation;
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

It is a great pleasure for me to represent Ms Wheelchair Maryland in facilitating this event, for the good of community and all people, some with disabilities and some without.

My hope is everyone had a good experience and learned something, either informational to add to their daily lives or inspirational to take away to enhance their lives or someone else’s.

Special Thank you too Downtown Silver Spring, Ms. Wheelchair MD/DC coordinators, Odette Bowen, DJ EZZY, Deangelo Redman, and Kimberly Gaskin.

I also, listened in on The Big Tigers Morning Show as he defended the Washington Redskins against a Cowboy fan. Tiger was holding it down.
