As
a
Ms. Wheelchair Maryland contestant, you will enjoy two empowering days
during which will you present your platform speech, answer questions from our
panel of judges, and exchange ideas through spirited and stimulating
discussions, interactive seminars, and social gatherings. Here is
just a brief description of the weekend's premier events.
Platform
Speech Competition A platform
is any issue you are passionate about that is related to disability
awareness and/or empowerment. If you are selected as Ms. or
Junior Miss Wheelchair Maryland, you
will spend your reign promoting your platform and the objectives of the
Ms.
Wheelchair
America
organization to targeted audiences. You will be asked to give a
three-minute speech outlining your platform, conveying its significance to
you, and describing what audiences you would target and why.
Empowerment
Session This is no holds barred opportunity for the
contestants to come together with other women with disabilities from
diverse backgrounds. Here we discuss anything and everything related
to being a woman with a disability in the 21st century.
Self-Discovery Activity
Go Goddess! was developed for
women, by women! It brings players together to talk honestly, cry
openly and laugh hysterically about issues common to all. By asking and
answering thought provoking questions, the game provides a fun and
relaxing way for women to share experiences, gain personal insight, and
realize the goddess within!

Meet
the Contestants A party by any other name is still a
party, and Ms. Wheelchair Maryland knows how to throw a party. This is is
a chance for contestants to relax and mingle with friends, family, and
other guests.
Roundtable with Former Titleholders
Contestants learn what to expec;t in the
year ahead by talking with former state and national Ms. Wheelchair
titleholders. It is an excellent way to get questions answered and
fears allayed.
Judging Rotation
This is the hallmark of the Ms. Wheelchair Maryland program. We were the first of all Ms. Wheelchair state programs to implement such an innovation.
While one contestant is interviewed by a panel of two judges, a second
contestant undergoes the same process with a separate panel of two judges. Simultaneously, another contestant gets her hair and
\ake-up professionally done, while still another takes part in a photo shoot. Contestants rotate through the different stations
until each contestant has completed each station.
Gala Dinner
Ms.
Wheelchair Maryland
organizers and the
DoubleTree Hotel in Rockville, Maryland, invite the public to
a five-star feast to witness the crowning of the next Ms. and Junior Miss
Wheelchair Maryland.
Fishbowl
Questions
During the onstage portion of the
competition, contestants draw the name of a judge from a fishbowl.
The judge whose name is drawn asks that contestant two questions.
Contestants may choose to answer either their serious or their
lighthearted question first
It is
our hope that you will join us for this special event to celebrate and share in
the accomplishments and achievements of some extraordinary women.
